ITA: L’arrivo del Natale quest’anno segna anche il ritorno, a dieci anni di distanza dalla release originale, della Nike Kobe 6 “Grinch”. La “Grinch” è un classico amato dagli sneakerhead e dagli appassionati di basket, un instant classic che ha fatto la sua prima apparizione ai piedi di Kobe Bryant il 25 dicembre 2010, sul parquet dello Staples Center durante una delle partite di Natale più attese di sempre: quella tra i Los Angeles Lakers bi-campioni in carica e i nuovi Miami Heat dei Big 3 – LeBron James, Dwayne Wade e Chris Bosh.
Da molti la 6 è ritenuta non solo una delle migliori Nike Kobe di sempre ma, addirittura, una delle migliori scarpe da basket all time. Non è un caso che la “Grinch” sia la colorway che segna il ritorno di un modello così atteso in versione Protro e la richiesta è stata, ovviamente, enorme. Per Special e Special Sneaker Club poter lavorare su una release così attesa e particolare è stato molto importante, ne hanno discusso Marco RIzzi e GianLuca Tedesco.
Marco: ormai manca davvero poco alla release delle nuove Nike Kobe 6 “Grinch”, sei contento di poter avere una release del genere in negozio?
GianLuca: Assolutamente. Prima di tutto perché va un po’ fuori dagli schemi delle solite uscite, tra collaborazioni, hype e il caos che comportano. Finalmente rifanno una colorway iconica, che già dieci anni fa era molto apprezzata dagli appassionati di sneakers e dai fan di Kobe che, anche alla release originale, l’hanno aspettata per settimane. Quindi un bel revival che penso sarà molto apprezzato anche dai fan più giovani, sperando comunque che tutti, anche tra i collezionisti con più esperienza, abbiano il giusto spirito e che la “Grinch” non sia oggetto di una speculazione che credo sia davvero di cattivo gusto.
M: hai detto una cosa molto importante riguardo l’interesse degli appassionati più o meno giovani. Oggi come dieci anni fa, anche se per motivi molto diversi, la release è davvero molto attesa. Nostalgia a parte, la scarpa in sé è talmente bella che è giusto possa piacere anche a chi ne è attratto per un fatto puramente estetico non soltanto per il “culto di Kobe” che, magari, un giovanissimo potrebbe non aver visto giocare se non al termine della carriera.
G: Esatto! Indipendentemente da Kobe la scarpa è pazzesca, ci sono un sacco di dettagli che possono piacere o meno. A parte tutto, spero davvero che questa release possa finire ai piedi di chi davvero la vuole e la sta aspettando da tanto.
M: Tra l’altro una Rétro assolutamente meritata per la “Grinch”. Sono molto contento che Nike l’abbia scelta come prima colorway con cui riportare la Kobe 6 sugli scaffali in versione Protro. La “Grinch” è un’icona e, per quanto mi riguarda, è sempre la prima che mi viene in mente se si parla di Kobe 6: c’è un legame molto solido tra colorway e modello che esiste solo tra i grandi classici. Poi esce a Natale…
G: Davvero un tempismo perfetto da parte di Nike.
M: Esatto. Hanno centrato in pieno tutte le scelte. Non so cosa ne pensi tu ma, per quanto mi riguarda, dovendo scegliere una Kobe 6 per una release speciale hanno preso proprio quella giusta.
G: Sono assolutamente d’accordo. Hanno fatto tutto per bene e dalle prime immagini sembra abbiano curato ogni dettaglio al meglio.
M: Poi, Rétro a parte, la “Grinch” è proprio una scarpa azzeccata. Il soggetto è perfetto: quando tutti facevano delle scarpe di Natale festose, Kobe ha scelto il Grinch perché per lui anche la notte di Natale era, prima di tutto, un giorno di lavoro e scendeva in campo per vincere, senza pietà. Quale personaggio migliore del Grinch
G: Proprio così: sembrava che il Grinch fosse sceso sul parquet, era proprio il suo personaggio. Poi la Kobe 6 “Grinch” non era la solita scarpa di Natale, se non sbaglio l’originale era parte di un pack speciale insieme a una LeBron 8 e una KD 3.
M: Sì! Lo “Stoplight Pack”, bellissimo. È un peccato si sia un po’ persa la tradizione delle sneakers natalizie, da quando in NBA le regole in fatto di scarpe sono meno rigide i giocatori possono indossare più o meno quello che vogliono. Prima c’era sempre quest’attesa della “holiday season” per acquistare la versione speciale, che ora non c’è più.
G: Per gli sneakerhead era davvero il paese dei balocchi, si aspettavano le partite di Natale per vedere non soltanto i giocatori più forti ma anche cos’avevano ai piedi. Si è un po’ persa la “magia”, anche perché spesso le sneakers natalizie venivano indossate solo per quella partita, quindi si legavano anche a grandi momenti di basket giocato.
M: Proprio quella partita di Natale del 2010 ricordo fosse speciale, perché era il primo incontro ufficiale tra i Lakers campioni in carica e i nuovi Miami Heat dei Big 3 con LeBron, Bosh e Wade. Ricordo proprio che oltre alla partita ero fisso sui piedi dei giocatori: a parte Wade che indossava ancora Jordan, Kobe aveva le “Grinch” e tutti i Lakers avevano PE di altri modelli con lo stesso schema di colori. Tra l’altro, non so se ricordi, ma i Lakers e Nike regalarono un paio di “Grinch” anche a tutte le star sedute in prima fila, c’erano scarpe verdi ovunque.
G: Pazzesco. Poi, sembra ieri ma sono già passati dieci anni. Non solo per questa release in particolare, a volte quando vedo qualche uscita in programma di sneakers che “tornano” spesso mi sembra sempre siano passati pochi anni dall’ultima volta, quando magari sono già trascorso un sacco di tempo. Con la “Grinch” è davvero pazzesco, nonostante escano tantissime sneakers ogni giorno mi sembra davvero sia passato poco tempo.
M: Secondo me è proprio il dettaglio che le rende speciali, sono diventate subito un “classico” e spiccano su tante altre release. Comunque, parlando di sensazioni strane, con la linea Nike Protro stanno uscendo le prime Rétro di sneakers di cui ho “vissuto” la release originale: fa un po’ ridere ma dieci anni fa c’ero, giocavo a basket e ho usato anche la Kobe 6, un paio che ho comprato proprio qui da Special tra l’altro. Vedendo come sto aspettando l’uscita delle “Grinch” sento di poter dire che finalmente capisco chi è più grande di noi.
G: È una cosa che non capisci finché non la provi, secondo me. È tutto amplificato: l’attesa per la release e poi la felicità o la delusione, se qualcosa non è fatto come ci si aspetta. Anche per me è così.
M: Con la linea Protro Nike sta facendo cose molto belle. Mi piace molto che stiano riuscendo a mantenere il look originale dei diversi modelli utilizzando, però, materiali avanzati e tecnologie migliori. Soprattutto per le Kobe mi sembra il modo giusto con cui creare delle Rétro, pensando anche all’attenzione di Bryant per il design e la performance delle sue sneakers.
G: Il design delle sue scarpe si è evoluto insieme al suo gioco e alla sua carriera: la Kobe 6 è stata una scarpa rivoluzionaria, l’apice del percorso iniziato con la Kobe 4 e l’introduzione del taglio basso. Se ci pensi, sono bastati tre anni per vedere la Kobe 9 altissima, disegnata proprio per proteggere le sue caviglie dopo l’infortunio al tendine d’Achille. Senza la stessa attenzione al design nelle Protro questi modelli perderebbero di valore, ogni dettaglio conta.
M: Per ora con Protro abbiamo rivisto le Kobe 1, 4, 5 e ora anche le 6. Tra i modelli mancanti, quale ti piacerebbe rivedere sugli scaffali?
G: Sicuramente la Kobe 3. A livello di design è la mia preferita, con l’upper disegnato ispirandosi alla squame del Black Mamba. Poi è la prima della linea ad essere disegnata da Eric Avar, che ha realizzato alcune delle sneakers migliori di Kobe.
M: Sai che sono anch’io un grande fan della Kobe 3, con me sfondi una porta aperta. Hanno un design hi-tech che sembra futuristico ancora oggi, sarebbero perfette per la linea Protro. Tra l’altro le abbiamo ri-viste soltanto con le uscite nei pack “Prelude” e “Fade to Black”, sarebbe ora di vedere una Rétro.
G: Esatto, speriamo Nike ci ascolti perché sarebbe davvero perfetta.
M: Per me poi il posto giusto per le Kobe sarà sempre in campo, è giusto che le priorità di Nike siano la performance e i giocatori.
G: Assolutamente, devono restare prima di tutto una scarpa da gioco.
M: Quindi, tornando a noi. Mettiamo da parte il negozio per un attimo, da collezionista e appassionato sei contento per il ritorno della “Grinch”?
G: Molto. Ormai è raro vedere sneakers a tema ed è un elemento che a me è sempre piaciuto. Come dicevamo, il tempismo di Nike è stato perfetto: Kobe le ha indossate a Natale, sono ispirate a un personaggio natalizio, lui era il Grinch in campo e tornano a Natale a dieci anni di distanza. A me piacciono questi piccoli dettagli, per me è una release perfetta.
M: quindi possiamo dire che quest’anno Nike ci ha fatto un gran regalo per Natale. Io non vedo l’ora.
G: Anche io! Speriamo di averle presto ai piedi!
ENG: Christmas this year has a special meaning, as it marks the return, ten years after the original release, of the Nike Kobe 6 “Grinch”. The “Grinch” is a classic loved both by sneakerheads and basketball fans, an instant classic that made its first appearance on the feet of Kobe Bryant on december 25th, 2010, on the legendary hardwood of the Staples Center during one of the most awaited Christmas games of all time: the one between the two-time champions Los Angeles Lakers and the new “Big 3” Miami Heat – with LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh.
Many consider the 6 not only one of the best Nike Kobes but, overall, one of the best basketball sneakers of all time. it’s not a case that the “Grinch” has been chosen by Nike as the first colorway for the comeback so awaited in the Protro version and the request has been, obviously, high. For Special and Special Sneaker Club it has been very important to have the chance to work on this kind of release, Marco Rizzi and GianLuca Tedesco chatted about that.
Marco: We are getting closer to the comeback of the Nike Kobe 6 “Grinch”, are you happy to have the chance to release this kind of shoe in-store?
GianLuca: Absolutely. First of all because it’s far from the recent releases, all linked to collaborations, hype and everything around that. Finally Nike is re-making an iconic colorway, that ten years ago was already appreciated by sneakerheads and Kobe fans, that at the original release waited for weeks to buy them. So it’s a good revival that, I think, will be much appreciated from the younger fans too, always hoping that everyone, among the “old school guys” too, will be in the right mood for the release and the “Grinch” won’t be subject to resell and stuff that I think is really distasteful in this situation.
M: You said a very important thing about the interest from older and younger fans. Today, just like ten years ago even if for different reasons, the release is really awaited. Aside of nostalgia, the shoe itself is so good that it’s fair that people can like it without the “cult of Kobe” that, maybe, a younger person can’t have as he hasn’t seen him play.
G: Exactly! The Kobe 6 is amazing, there are a lot of details that people can like or not. I really hope that this release can end up on feet of true fans that are waiting them long time.
M: By the way, I think that this one is a well deserved Rétro for the “Grinch”, I’m really happy that Nike picked this one as the first colorway to take back the Kobe 6 on the shelves in a new Protro version. The “Grinch” is an icon and, to me, is always the first that comes to mind when I’m talking about the Kobe 6: there’s a strong link between the colorway and the model that exists only in the true classics. It comes back on Christmas too…
G: Yeah, truly a perfect timing by Nike.
M: Exactly. They made all the right choices. Don’t know what you think about that but, to me, when they had to pick one Kobe 6 for a special release they done it right, is the perfect one.
G: I absolutely agree. They’ve done everything in the right way and looking at the first pics it seems that they’ve done a perfect work down to the details.
M: Aside of the new Rétro, the “Grinch” is just a spot-on shoe. The subject is perfect: when everyone was making joyful red-and-green Christmas shoes, Kobe picked the Grinch as Christmas Night to him was, first of all, a working night and he was going on court to win, no mercy. Which character is more fitting than the Grinch?
G: Right! It looked like the Grinch was on court to steal Christmas, it was his character. Plus the Kobe 6 “Grinch” wasn’t the usual Christmas shoe, if I remember right the original one was part of a Special Pack with a LeBron 8 and a KD 3.
M: Yes! The “Stoplight Pack”, beautiful. It’s a pity that we somehow lost the “tradition” of Christmas sneakers, since the NBA Rules about shoes give more freedom to players they wear what they want all year. Then there we always had to wait and check what was releasing on “holiday season” and rush to buy the special editions.
G: It was truly paradise for sneakerheads: we were all waiting for the NBA Christmas Games to see not only the great athletes but what they were wearing, too. We lost the “magic”, also because most of times they were wearing the Christmas shoe only once, so it linked to their performance on court.
M: I remember that Christmas game from 2010 as a special one, as it was the first official match between the Champions, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the New “Big 3” Miami Heat with LeBron, Bosh and Wade. I remember that I was waiting for the game but I was super focused on the sneakers too. Wade still was with Air Jordan, Kobe had the “Grinch” and all the other Lakers had Nike PEs with the same color scheme. The LA Lakers and Nike gifted a pair of “Grinch” to each one of the stars that sat on sideline, there were green shoes everywhere.
G: Just crazy. It seems yesterday but it was ten years ago. It isn’t just this release in particular, but everytime I see a scheduled release for a shoe that is “retroed” often I feel like it’s just few years since the last release when maybe it’s like long time. With the “Grinch” is different, even if we had tons of kicks in the last ten years, it feels like they were closer in time.
M: I think that’s the detail that makes them special, they became an “instant classic” and stand out every other release. Anyway, talking about strange feelings, with the Protro line Nike is releasing the first Retro sneakers of which I “lived” the original release are coming out: it’s funny but ten years ago I was there, I was playing basketball and I also used the Kobe 6, a pair that I have bought right here from Special by the way. If I look how I’m waiting for the “Grinch” to come back, I think i can finally say that I understand collectors older than us.
G: It’s something that you can’t understand until it happens, I think. Everything is amplifies: the wait for the release and then the happiness or the delusion, if something isn’t as you hoped. It’s like that for me, too.
M: With the Protro Line Nike is making great things. I really like that they are able to keep the old school look “updating” materials and technologies. Expecialy for Kobes, I think that’s the right way to make Rétros, thinking also how involved Kobe was in the design process of his shoes, performance was the only thing that mattered.
G: The design of his shoes evolved with his game and his career: the Kobe 6 was a revolutionary shoe, the apex of the evolution path that started with the Kobe 4 and the introduction of the low-cut. If you think about that, it took only three years to see the super hi-cut Kobe 9, that was designed to protect Kobe’s ankles after he injuried his Achilles tendon. Without the same attention to detail and design, the Protos would lose value, everything counts.
M: To me the right place for Kobes is on the hardwood, it’s right that Nike’s priorities are performance and basketball players.
G: Absolutely, they have to keep the has basketball shoes first of all.
M: Until now with Protro we’ve seen back the Kobe 1, 4, 5 and, now the 6. Which one of the missing models you would like to see back the most?
G: The Kobe 3. Design wise is my favourite one, with the upper inspired by the skin of the Black Mamba. It’s the first of the line designed by Eric Avar too, who designed some of the best Kobes.
M: You know I’m a hube fan of the 3 too, It’s easy to convince me. They have an hi-tech look that feel “futuristic” even today, they would be perfect for the Protro line. We’ve seen them back only with the special releases in the “Prelude” and “Fade to Black” packs, it’s time to see a proper Rétro.
G: Exactly, let’s hope that Nike hear us because they would really fit in the project.
M: So, back to us. Putting the store and your work aside for a moment. As a collector and as a fan, are you happy for the comeback of the “Grinch”?
G: A lot. Nowadays it’s rare to see themed shoes, something I’ve always liked. As we told before, Nike’s timing is perfect: Kobe wore them on Christmas, they are inspired by a Christmas character, he was the Grinch on court and they’re coming back on Christmas, ten years after their original release. I like all this small details, It’s a perfect release to me.
M: Then we can say that Nike gave us a huge present this year. I can’t wait to see them.
G: Me too! I hope to have them on feet as soon as I can.
